The Mapua Insititute of Technology Cardinals crushed the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 101-72, while the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers trounced the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates, 75-60, on Friday in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The host Cardinals launched a run-and-gun blitz to secure a lopsided win improving their win-loss record to 2-3. The Generals remained at the bottom of the standings with a 0-5 card.
Josan Nimes led the Cardinals’ onslaught with 18 points while Stephen Que finished with 17 and Justin Serrano 16. CJ Isit, who scored 12 points, notched seven of Mapua’s total 30 assists that enabled them to lead by as much as 18 points, 72-54, in the third canto.
“Our defense was a big improvement, our passing also is good now. It’s really difficult to face a 0-4 team because they have nothing to lose,” said Mapua coach Atoy Co in Filipino.
Laminou Hamadou led the Generals with 16 points; Francis Mun¬sayac added 15, Sydney Onwubere 13 and Raymund Pascua 11.
In the other game, the JRU Heavy Bombers banked on Bernabe Teodoro’s stellar performance in the fourth period to post their third victory in five matches. The JRU remained no.5 in the standings.
The Lucena City-native Teodoro posted 16 of his 25 points in the pivotal period highlighted with four triples to power the Heavy Bombers’ triumph. He also notched seven rebounds and three assists.
The Pirates now have four straight defeats against a lone win.
“I was waiting for him to explode. Thanks God, finally he did,” said Jose Rizal coach Vergel Meneses, referring to Teodoro. Besides Teodoro, John Pontejos contributed 10 and Mark Dela Virgen nine, Joseph Gabayne 15, Victor Ngudjol 13 and Shaquille Alanes 10.
In the third game, last year’s runner-up Arellano University Chiefs scored a 104-92 win over the San Sebastian College Stags to forge a three-way tie at second spot with the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas and San Beda College Red Lions.
In the high school division, the Mapua Red Robins beat the Emilio Aguinaldo College Brigadiers, 88-80 to improve its record to 4-1 while the Lyceum Junior Pirates posted an 81-73 triumph over the Jose Rizal Light Bombers in overtime.
