Alay Kapwa, an annual Lenten evangelization and fundraising program of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines for social services of the poor and most in need, is back in 2016.
On Holy Monday, March 21 from 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Caritas Manila in partnership with Radio Veritas 846, will conduct its Alay Kapwa telethon to raise awareness and funds for Caritas Damayan, a preventive health and disaster management program.
Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Each year, an average of 20 storms and typhoons hit the country. During this moments, many people especially the poor need help and assitance.
Caritas Manila, the lead social service and development ministry of the Church, responds to crises and calamities through Caritas Damayan.
In 2015, Alay Kapwa funds were exhausted in Caritas Damayan’s relief operations to help our brothers and sisters affected by typhoons like Egay, Ineng, Land and Nona, as well as other minor disasters in urban poor communities like fires, floods and tropical depressions. Caritas Damayan also extended help to displaced Lumads.
In this season of Lent, especially in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Filipinos must heed the call of Pope Francis to practice mercy through concretes act of charity. As His Emminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said, “Is its therefore our hope that we will be more generous in our almsgiving this Lent.”
Funds raised from Alay Kapwa will be used as emergency funds for both natural and human-caused calamities like typhoons, floods, fire, earthquakes, and other tragedies and crises, and for disaster prevention and mitigation programs.
Listeners can participate and donate in the telethon by calling 925-7931 to 39. Phone lines will be open throughout the live broadcast on Radio Veritas 846 and also via livestreaming at www.veritas846.ph.
