CARLA ABELLANA, TOM RODRIGUEZ AND DENNIS TRILLO: Local TV’s most unforgettable love triangle

Dennis_Carla_Tom-04The Sunday Times Magazine went on a set visit last week to catch up with the stars of My Husband’s Lover who talked about how the series had changed their lives—from their careers to their personal views in life. Carla Abellana, Tom Rodriguez and Dennis Trillo—Philippine television’s most unforgettable love triangle—also reveal who they want Vincent to choose at the end of the series next week.

Q: How involved were you in developing the role of Lally?
A: I was the one who decided na maging subdued ‘yong acting for the character of Lally para maiba siya kahit na mabigat yung pinag-dadaanan niya. It went well with what the creative team had in mind for the “perfect wife” kaya nga laging ayos si Lally, malinis at mabango. I chose my own stylist para ma-execute yung look and I’m so happy that Direk—even used certain pieces of my wardrobe as focal points in his artistic scenes. It was Direk Joel Torre who once told me that dapat pati suot mo tama para sa gagawin mong eksena.

Q: Are you as patient and understanding as Lally?
A: Ay hindi ako ganun ka-martyr! (Laughs) Maalaga ako katulad niya sa pamilya; I’m quite patient because I was a pre-school teacher before I joined showbiz; but let’s just say I were in Lally’s shoes? I’d leave Eric right away!

Q: Who would you want Vincent to choose in the end—Lally or Eric?
A: Neither. After hurting both Lally and Eric nang paulit-ulit, he doesn’t deserve to have either of them. He shouldn’t turn his back on his responsibilities on his children but I think they should all start over.

Q: How has My Husband’s Lover changed your career?
It improved my career so much. It opened a lot of doors, opened a lot of opportunities. I’m really happy. I was challenged sa role but at the same time it gave me an avenue to be able to showcase kung ano yun pinaghirapan ko sa larangan ng pag-arte. So I’m really happy sa acceptance ng tao, sa pagtangkilik nila sa ginagawa kong trabaho.

Q: Do you think that it will be difficult to top the role of Vincent—its uniqueness, boldness and fame—in the projects and offers that are now coming your way?
A: Sana hindi kasi I know it’s just the start. As an actor, sabi nila it’s a never-ending learning process so I’m really looking forward to that. Parang tip of the iceberg pa lang.

Q: Who would you like Vincent to choose in the end—Lally or Eric?
A: For me, I would like him to choose whoever would make him happy and sometimes yun ang mahirap kasi hindi siya black and white. So siguro a nice compromise would be OK. At sana silang tatlo, hopefully, sa akin, ideal situation lang siguro na ewan ko kung posible sa totoong buhay pero sana the three of them can co-exist and get along.

Q: How has My Husband’s Lover changed your life?
A: In terms of my career, this has had the biggest impact so far.

Q: You’ve said before that you chose the role of Eric over Vincent’s, but in terms of exposure, Vincent has had more scenes in the series because he’s the one experiencing a personal conflict about his sexuality. Any regrets on this?
A: I’ve never had issues about exposure. I found my role as Eric very challenging dahil mahirap mailabas yung feminine side sa pag-arte sa lalaking tulad ko. From my voice [which he slightly changed to a higher tone], sa pag-sasalita, hanggang sa pinakamaliit na galaw, pinag-aralan ko, kaya pag dating ko sa bahay pagod na pagod ako! Ang importante sa akin ay yung storya, at yung naging pag-ganap naming lahat sa characters namin to deliver a good series for everyone.

Q: What would you like your next project to be after such a well-received and reviewed portrayal of Eric?
A: Pressure for sure yung next project, pero maybe something light naman muna after MHL.

Q: Who would you like Vincent to choose in the end—Lally or Eric?
A: As far as good TV goes, I’d like to have an alternate ending, which has never been done on TV before. Sa mga DVDs meron niyan pero it would be interesting to have alternate endings diba? But personally, I’d like Vincent to go back to Lally kasi ayokong masira ang pamilya.
