International junior campaigner Maria Carmencita Isabela Carlos copped the runner-up honors in the 2017 Asian Under-14 Tennis Championship girls’ singles held at the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Carlos suffered a 1-6, 1-6 decision loss to fourth seed Soo Ha Jang of South Korea in the gold-medal match of the tournament sanctioned by the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF).
“I wrapped up the 2017 tennis year as a runner-up in the Asian Tennis Federation tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. Not a bad finish, but I know I can do way better. Will be back next year, stronger and better,” Carlos posted on his Facebook account.
It was Carlos’ second straight runner-up trophy in singles after achieving the same feat in the 1st ATF 14-Under Series held in Kelana Jaya in Malaysia.
The 13-year old Carlos made it to the finals by toppling unheralded Jannat Kaur Anand of India in the Final Four, 6-2, 6-2.
She also defeated Na Lim Kang of South Korea in the first round (6-1, 6-2), wild card Noelle Vivian Faber of Singapore in the second round (6-0, 6-0) and fifth seed Delilah Kuronen of Sweden in the quarterfinals (6-0, 7-5).
