INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero will defend his title in the Philippines on July 21 at the Araneta Coliseum against a yet to be chosen opponent.
Boxing promoter Sammy Gello-ani said that the Colombian knockout artist Mauricio Fuentes (16-2 win-loss card with 10 knockouts) is likely to be the challenger of the Ormoc City native Casimero (18-2 card with 10 KOs) though no contract was signed yet.
“We are very thankful that Johnriel’s dream to fight in his own country will finally come true,” Gello-ani told The Manila Times on Monday in a phone interview. “We are on an optional title-defense and we can choose anyone if ever Fuentes won’t fight us.”
Gello-ani added that Casimero’s trainer, Christopher Tepora Jr., would begin training his ward at the Omega Gym in Cebu City this week.
The fight would be Casimero’s third title defense since he won the title via knockout from Luis Lazarte of Argentina in February 2012.
Former World Boxing Organization junior bantamweight titleholder Marvin Sonsona and unbeaten flyweight contender Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar are both being eyed to fight in the event’s under card bouts.
