Asian Games 2006 wushu sanshou [contact fighting]gold medalist Rene Catalan suffered his second straight setback in mixed martial arts (MMA) after bowing to Kun Khmer [Cambodian martial art] champion Khim Dima via technical knockout in One Fighting Championship Total Domination on Friday at the Singapore Stadium in Singapore.

Catalan attempted to control the bout by attempting an armbar in the first round but Dima slipped away. With 3:40 left in the second round, Dima unleashed two roundhouse kicks followed by several punches to Catalan’s head that prompted the referee to stop the fight.

Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) founder Alvin Aguilar commenting on Catalan’s defeat explained that wushu sanshou and MMA are two entirely different arenas, “Catalan is a world champion in wushu and my good friend but he is not an MMA fighter. He is a wushu world champion and there’s a big difference,” Aguilar said.

Meanwhile, Brazilian fighter Bibiano Fernandes defeated Korean “Stone Cutter” Soo Chul Kim in the five-rounder main event via unanimous decision to become the One FC bantamweight world champion.

In the women’s division, Sherilyn Lim won over Ann Osman via split decision.
