1

ROSARIO: The office of Mayor Jose “Nonong” Ricafrente will distribute bags with school supplies to 5,700 kindergarten and elementary students when classes open on June 2. Ricafrente said the free bags and supplies are under the “Balik Eskwela” project which has benefitted almost half a million poor students since 2007. Meanwhile, high school and college students can buy school supplies at discounted prices from the Diskwento Caravan project of the Department of Trade and Industry.

I wish these politicians would be more imaginative and creative in spreading their ‘blessings’ among their constituencies. In the wake of the ‘Yolanda’ catastrophe, Tacloban was immediately flooded with ‘Binay’ food bags and packets. Not to be outdone, the other camp distributed ‘Korina’ flip-flops, (no pun intended). In Rosario, the good mayor might have established..or caused the building of a town library, or reading center. Admittedly, we have been turning out boys and girls who can read and write. Without anything enlightening and uplifting to read after school, however, these children become functional illiterates very quickly.
Can our politicians please dwell on this for a bit..before constructing more basketball courts and giving away more ‘name-emblazoned’ bags.
