Cebu City mayor faces suspension

THE Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it is ready to issue the 60-day Malacanang-imposed suspension order against Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama in relation to the demolition of a center island in barangay Labangon in 2014.

DILG Regional Office 7 director Rene K. Burdeos said the suspension order will be served once they receive the copy of the order signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. dated December 2.

Rama, of United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) party, was ordered suspended by Malacañang on the complaint of barangay chairman Victor Buendia for grave abuse of authority, grave misconduct and oppression when he ordered to demolish a center island with street lighting project on Katipunan Street, Barangay Labangon, Cebu City, October last year.

Buendia said the P300,000 project was approved by Rama himself.

Rama is also facing administrative case before the Office of the President in relation to the P20,000 calamity aid he gave to some 4,200 Cebu officials and employees in December 2014.

The mayor is currently attending the Climate Change Summit in Paris, France and expected to arrive today, Thursday.
