Centro Escolar University (CEU) will defend both its basketball and volleyball titles while De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) and Chiang Kai Shek College drew first blood in their respective finals series in the 44th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) tournament.
CEU will take on Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in the basketball championship while it tangles with San Beda College Alabang in the volleyball finals. The best-of-three series starts November 9 when the league resumes play after the semestral break.
The CEU Scorpions ousted San Beda, 55-25, and PWU nipped last year’s runner up Rizal Technological University (RTU), 57-55, in Saturday’s semifinals at CKSC gym.
The juniors best-of-three finals opener on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum saw CKSC besting defending champion Miriam College, 58-54, with DLSZ also moving one win away from a third straight title after stopping St. Stephen’s High School, 35-24.
In the senior volleyball semifinals, CEU beat PWU, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, and San Beda downed RTU, 25-22, 25-17, 25-13.
San Beda will vie for a second volleyball crown after its defending champion midgets squad arranged a clash with DLSZ.
DLSZ also fights for a second title when it clashes with St. Scholastica’s College in the juniors finals.
Meanwhile, RTU bagged its fourth staight senior futsal title, beating host University of Asia and the Pacific. Assumption College finished third.
In juniors play, it will be DLSZ against Miriam for the championship. DLSZ, the 43rd season champion, bested St. Paul College Pasig, 7-1, while Miriam stunned defending champion San Beda, 3-1, in the semifinals.
