Defending champions Johnny Arcilla and Marian Jade Capadocia outclassed their respective rivals to advance to the semifinals of the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings on Thursday at the PCA indoor courts in Paco, Manila.
Arcilla, an eight-time champion, posted an easy 6-4, 6-0 win over the 15-year-old Alberto Lim Jr. in the tournament, which offers a whopping P600,000 total cash prize including P100,000 to the men’s singles champion and P50,000 to the ladies’ singles titlist.
The second-seeded Arcilla will face No. 5 Rolando Ruel Jr., who ousted No. 2 Elbert Anasta, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 7-5, in the semis of the event supported by Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Hon. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc. and Seno Hardware.
Top pick Patrick John Tierro joined Arcilla in the next round after turning back No. 7 Marc Anthony Alcoseba, 6-4, 6-0. Tierro will battle the victor between No. 3 Marc Anthony Reyes and No. 9 Ronard Joven.
In the women’s division, Capadocia was also able to secure her slot in the semis at the expense of No. 7 Christine Patrimonio, 6-1, 6-4, to arrange a match against sixth pick Marinel Rudas who stunned No. 3 Edilyn Balanga, 6-1, 6-4.
Fifth pick Hannah Grace Espinosa’s relentless assaults caught No. 2 Clarice Patrimonio off guard en route to a 7-6 (0), 2-6, 6-3 upset win. Espinosa advanced into the semis and will meet No. 4 Maika Tanpoco who routed unseeded Jzash Eale Canja, 6-0, 6-1, in the tournament sponsored by United Auctioneers Inc.
