The combined effort of Jeff Chan and import Dior Lowhorn led Rain or Shine to a 98-92 victory over Blackwater on Friday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
The left-handed shooter Chan posted 20 points including four triples while the 6’5 Lowhorn contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds to improve the Elasto Painters’ win-loss record to 2-1.
“As what I’ve told you before, there are no easy games anymore,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao during the postgame interview. “Just escaping an upset is already a big deal and earning a win is big deal.”
“We have a long break because of the All Star weekend and we’re going to take advantage of it to get better. We have to work more,” he added.
Guard Paul Lee finished with 14 points and five assists while center Jay-R Quinahan scored 11 points, including the three crucial free throws in the dying seconds that resulted in Rain or Shine’s victory. Jericho Cruz contributed nine points also for the Elasto Painters.
Chan scored three straight points in the first period providing Rain or Shine a 29-21 lead heading into the second period. Lowhorn unleashed his fury in the second canto keeping the Elasto Painters at a considerable safe distance, 52-43, at halftime.
Rain or Shine established its biggest lead, 65-52, in the third quarter. But Blackwater initiated an 11-2 run highlighted by Carlo Lastimosa’s jumper and lay-up to close the gap, 63-67, before the final quarter starts.
Rain or Shine regained its form at the start of the payoff frame with a 13-6 run capped by Cruz’s corner trey resulting in an 86-74 lead. The Elite, however, refused to surrender without a fight responding with a 10-0 run reducing the deficit to just two points – 84-86.
Leading 91-84, with still two minutes to go, the Elite leaned on output of JP Erram and Carlo Lastimosa to bring the score to 93-90 with 57 seconds left. But their gain was nullified by Quinahan’s three free throws that gave Rain or Shine a 96-90 lead.
The Elasto Painters didn’t relinquish the advantage from thereon.
Lastimosa posted 20 points; Erram had 16 points, Reil Cervantes 15 and Mike Cortez 10. Import Eric Dawson posted 14 points and 25 rebounds also for the Elite. Blackwater’s win-loss record dropped to 1-2.
