Checkpoint yields P8-M marijuana

BACNOTAN, La Union: Four men were arrested while P8 million worth of dried marijuana leaves were confiscated by the police at a checkpoint in Bacnotan town on Friday.

The Bacnotan operatives stopped the transport of marijuana onboard a tourist transport service van with temporary plate number 013610 along the National Highway.

Police Chief Insp. Fredelex Marron, Bacnotan chief of police, identified the suspects as van driver Ronnie Dagsa, 27, Giovanny Gapasin, 25, and Christopher Bangsil, 20.

Dagsa said they hired the van from Maglaya Van Rental in San Fernando City, which they used in transporting 90 pieces of tubes and 32 bricks of marijuana leaves.

“They first disregarded the checkpoint when my men flagged them down, they tried to escape,” Marron said.

He added that the suspects came from San Gabriel town, particularly barangays Lacong and Arosip, and were traveling towards Bacnotan Poblacion when they were flagged down.

The suspects are now detained, pending the filing of cases against them.
