Applications for 2014-2015 Chevening Scholarships, the prestigious global scholarship program of the UK government, officially opened on September 1.
The scholarships, which are funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations, operate in 118 countries worldwide, and this year will support over 600 established or emerging leaders. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject and at any of the UK’s leading universities.
The scholarships aim to support UK foreign policy priorities by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers and decision-makers around the world.
British Ambassador Designate Asif Ahmad said, “The Chevening program provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network of continuing professional significance. It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK. With 2013 marking the 30th anniversary of the program, we hope that this year’s Chevening Scholarships will continue to attract the very brightest and best.”
Scholars are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world, sometimes in partnership with sponsoring organizations.
Chevening alumni have an excellent record of rising to positions of leadership across a wide range of fields: including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion and academia. Some work as MPs, leading journalists, or policy advisers to NGOs and think tanks; others occupy senior positions in commercial organizations.
Some notable Chevening Alumni in the Philippines are: Undersecretary Chito Gascon for the Office of Political Affairs, in the Office of the President, a practicing lawyer, Gascon is frequently consulted for his expertise in Philippine politics; Glenda Gloria, managing editor of the online news agency Rappler.com and co-founder of NewsBreak, as well as former chief executive officer of ABS-CBN, one of the top news networks in the country; Howei Severino, head of GMA Network Online and a famous documentarist; Maria Antonia Arroyo, founder of Hybridigm Consulting Inc., a company that specializes in matching the needs of Filipino businesses with innovations in biotechnology, and recipient of the Ten Oustanding Young Men (TOYM) award; and Christopher Arnuco, recently appointed as the chairman and administrator of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority, Office of the President of the Philippines, among others.
Applications for Chevening Scholarships must be submitted online at www.chevening.org. Applicants should read the online guidance and demonstrate how they meet the Chevening selection criteria before submitting an application. Deadline for submission of applications is on November 15.
