Perlas Pilipinas suffered a rough beating from powerhouse China, 43-117, in the top division’s quarterfinals of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Women’s Cup 2017 on Thursday at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru, India.
The women’s national team simply could not match the might of Asia’s No. 1 squad as it trailed all throughout the 40-minute match.
With the beatdown, the Philippines ended its winless campaign in the tournament and missed a chance to qualify for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 in Spain.
Afril Bernardino topscored for the PH with 11 points while Camille Sambile added 10 markers and three rebounds.
Rising star Li Yueru registered a double-double of 17 points and 12 boards for China, which raced to its fourth win in as many games and set up a semifinals meeting with defending champion Japan.
The Chinese team quickly buried the Filipino side in the opening period, 33-13, and then limited the representative from Southeast Asia to only two points in the ensuing quarter.
The world No. 10 veterans proceeded to dominate the No. 49 top division newcomers for the rest of the game.
China soundly outclassed the Philippines in field goal percentage (57-24), rebounds (61-27) and assists (42-5).
Perlas will play in the classification round in an attempt to retain its Division A status, which it achieved two years ago.
