China’s first carrier heads to sea

BEIJING: China’s first aircraft carrier left on Tuesday on a training mission to the South China Sea, escorted by missile destroyers and frigates, state media said.

The newly commissioned Liaoning left its home port of Qingdao accompanied by two missile destroyers, the Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, the Yantai and Weifang, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The deployment comes amid heightened tensions between China and its neighbours over disputed waters, with Beijing declaring air defence rights over islands controlled by Japan at the weekend, provoking a furious international reaction.

Beijing took effective control of Scarborough shoal, claimed by Manila and just 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the Philippines, last year.

It keeps up nearly daily pressure in the South China Sea, which it claims almost in its entirety and where Vietnam and others have competing claims to some of the islets.

China’s vessels also frequently patrol near the disputed East China Sea islands known as Senkaku in Tokyo, which controls them, and in China as Diaoyu.

The Liaoning’s latest mission is to test the equipment it carries and is “a normal arrangement in the carrier’s scheduled training,” Xinhua said, citing Chinese navy authorities.

The carrier is a refurbished vessel purchased from Ukraine. It went into service in Sep-tember 2012, and top naval commanders have promised the country will have more such ships.

  1. We cannot confront China, in the Spratly Island disputes. They are growing well in economic and military capability. Thanks to U.S. and the West for assisting China’s economy. U.S. owe China trillion dollar. The white house squandering tax money and
    spending more for Obamacare.

  2. based on my Chinese related experiences since my childhood and I am 77 years old, I consider Chinese people as cruel, a bully and racists.

    • I agree to what you said. I’d had experience working with them…they are arrogant, boastful, and tend to treat us like dirt. Just look at how they treat the Filipinos in Hongkong and Taiwan. They are ruthless people. Just look at the survey on their response about giving aid to typhoon victims.. more than 80% said no. That could only mean that they are in favor of invading the country. I’m pretty sure that they will probably kill everyone. I hope the Philippine gov’t take measures now in upgrading the Military personnel and equipment before everything is too late. Not only that,, they should realize that we need the US no matter what. Even if the US is not in the Philippines, the Chinese will invade us. So we better take sides now. And hurry up!!!
