Chinese fighter dies before One Championship fight

Prior to the Spirit of Champions on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, a Chinese flyweight mixed martial arts fighter identified as Yang Jiang Bing died on Thursday reportedly because of severe dehydration.

Yang, who had a 5-1 win-loss record, was supposed to fight Filipino Geje Eustaquio. The bout was totally scrapped before the weigh-in on Thursday leaving Eustaquio with no opponent Friday night.

The other bouts went on as scheduled.

According to reports, the 21-year-old Yang suffered dehydration while trying to achieve the required weight for his class. He arrived at the San Juan De Dios Hospital in Pasay City unconscious and non-responsive.

ONE President and CEO Victor Cui in a statement published in his Facebook account said, “There is nothing more profoundly tragic and sad than when a member of the ONE Championship family, current or past, passes away. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Yang Jian Bing. We will work closely with the family and offer all the support they need in any way we can during this very difficult time,”
