Amid mounting calls for his resignation, President Benigno Aquino 3rd gained the support of evangelical church leaders who called on the Chief Executive to finish his term.
During a prayer meeting in Malacañang, Jesus is Lord (JIL) leader Bro. Eddie Villanueva said the congregation of Christian denominations was fully throwing its support behind the president.
“This Christian movement is not a part of the resignation movement. We are beseeching you, Mr. President, to fulfill your duty, finish your term,” Villanueva said.
“This historic prayer gathering is providential in the living heart of God,” he added.
The National Transformation Council and some Catholic bishops earlier called on Aquino to step down.
But Villanueva said while there may have been lapses that led to the Mamasapano tragedy, these do not justify calls for the president to step down.
“Assuming there were mistakes in Mamasapano, they’re not ground for Aquino resignation,” he said.
Villanueva denied allegations that his group was bribed by Malacañang to hold the prayer gathering, saying Christian groups are one with Aquino’s aim of fulfilling his duties until 2016.
The special prayer gathering was led by the president.
