Comelec chief pushes Lim as replacement

Commission on Elections  (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. wants Commissioner Christian Robert Lim to be his successor if Justice Secretary Leila de Lima will not be named to his post when he retires next month.

Brillantes said Lim is qualified to head the commission because the latter is a “senior commissioner.”

“If you ask me, kung hindi si Leila [if not Leila], it should be Lim because he’s the most senior,” he said.

Brillantes explained that it is better to appoint someone who already knows the ropes.

“If you put someone there who has no experience sa election, matagal pa ang period of adjustment [the period of adjustment will be long],” he added.

He however admitted that naming his replacement is the prerogative of President Benigno Aquino 3rd.

In case the president asks for his recommendation, Brillantes said he would chose either De Lima or Lim.

He said de Lima, being an election lawyer, would have no difficulty in adjusting to her work since she only has to learn the administrative aspect and the AES [Automated Election System.]

Brillantes and senior commissioners Elias Yusoph and Lucenito Tagle will retire on February 2, 2015.

Asked about his plans after retirement, Brillantes said he will continue to practice law.

  1. Any recommendation from Brilliantes or any sitting politicians should not be considered in any shape or form . A Comelec chairman position is so vital and instrumental in creating effective and dependable policies in bringing about an honest and transparent election results in order to restore the already lost integrity of the agency itself. We need new Comelec officials that would be neutral , not in favor of any party and cannot be influenced politically (independent) just like the three branches of the gov’t if we are to remain a democratic country.
