• Comelec gun ban violators now at 1,561 – PNP

    The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Sunday the arrest of more than 1,500 persons for violating the nationwide election gun ban. Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, said that as of 8 am Sunday, 1,561 persons, mostly civilians, have been apprehended for carrying firearms since the implementation of the Commission on Elections gun ban on January 10. The figure includes 1,501 civilians, 20 security guards, 15 government officials, 11 police officers, six Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel, five employees of a law enforcement agency, two members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit, and one Bureau of Fire Protection personnel, Mayor said. He added that the PNP confiscated 1,173 firearms, 14,818 deadly weapons, 73 grenades, 128 other explosives, 55 firearm replicas, 431 bladed/pointed weapons and 14,131 pieces of ammunition. The gun ban is being implemented by the PNP and other law enforcement agencies in line with the country’s national and local elections on May 9. It started will last until June 8.
