Communist rebels kill 2 soldiers in Agusan Sur

ZAMBOANGA CITY– Communist rebels killed two government soldiers and wounded another in an attack in the town of Esperanza in Agusan del, a spokesman for the New People’s Army said Thursday.

Omar Guevara said rebel forces killed the soldiers who were members of the 26th Infantry Battalion in this week’s fighting that erupted in Maliwanag village.
He said the platoon of soldiers were resting in a hut when the rebels pounced on them. One soldier was also wounded in the clash, he said.
The platoon going after an NPA group that raided the compound of Shannalyne Plantation Company and a rubber plantation, Guevara said.
A government militia man was also wounded in a separate attack by the NPA in San Luis town, also in Agusan del Sur.
”In these two events, the operating unit of NPA immediately withdrew without any casualty whatsoever,” Guevara said.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been fighting for decades for the establishment of a separate Maoist state in the country.
