Grand slam coach Tim Cone aims to capitalize on the renewed drive of Governor’s Cup champion Barangay Ginebra as the Gin Kings begin its campaign in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 42 Philippine Cup on Sunday.

“We’re aiming to win our first game and we’ll see where we go from there. We always hope to compete for a championship. We just won a championship. We hope to sustain it this season,” Cone told The Manila Times.

Cone said his wards have had only few days of practice since beating Meralco for the title last conference in October.

“I will give our guys a pass at this point because we’ve only had a couple of days of practice. But still, we’re a long way from where we need to be, and only have a short time to get there. We’ll definitely need to step it up,” added Cone.

Cone said Ginebra would also improve its defense this season.

The Gin Kings will face Talk ‘N Text in its first game on November 27 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Cone will field newly acquired players this season among them swingman Paolo Taha, Gilas player Kevin Ferrer, forward Raymon Jamito and the 6’11 Jericho de Guzman.

Ginebra’s core remains largely intact with the presence of Japeth Aguilar, Solomon Mercado, Dave Marcelo, playmaker Earl Scottie Thompson, Mark Caguioa and Jay-Jay Helterbrand.

They will be supported by starting point guard LA Tenorio, forward Joe Devance, Chris Ellis, Aljon Mariano and Jervy Cruz.

Ferrer, Aguilar and Ellis are known for their prowess in outside shooting.
