Consumer group includes cheaper electricity in christmas ‘Wish List’

MEMBERS of the “People for Power (P4P) Coalition” on Friday called on Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) through a “Christmas wishlist” to scrap its recent coal investments and pursue cheaper, cleaner energy for its customers. “For the Energy Regulatory Commissioners, our wish is simple: reject the coal power supply agreements or resign,” said Erwin Puhawan of the Freedom from Debt Coalition, a member of P4P who filed petitions for intervention against deals between Meralco and seven coal power generation companies. Meralco recently sealed a deal with Solar Philippines to procure 85 megawatts of solar energy at P2.99 per kilowatt-hour, which would be sourced from the latter’s plant being built in Concepcion, Tarlac. The Koalisyong Pabahay ng Pilipinas also asked Congress to levy a P300 coal tax to aid the shift from coal to renewable energy.
