President Benigno Aquino 3rd prefers to focus on the clean-up operations for the Cavite oil spill and not on finding out what caused it, a Palace official said Saturday.
“The directive of the President is to make sure that we focus on the recovery and clean-up operations because we understand that the oil spill affected a number of barangays. We have to contain the effects of the leak first,” Palace Undersecretary Abigail Valte said Saturday.
About half a million liters of diesel leaked while a tanker was unloading the fuel at the Petron Corporation’s oil depot in Rosario, Cavite, on Thursday.
The oil spread 20 kilometers along the coastline of Cavite, affecting four towns.
Valte cited that the representatives of private corporations and the local government units have already agreed to send more tugboats and marine environment personnel to help in the clean-up.
As for probing the liabilities of certain individuals and units for the leak, the Philippine Coast Guard has formed the adjudication team to resolve the case, she said.
Valte said the Aquino administration will touch base with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to identify the assistance needed by the affected coastal barangays.
