The Himamaylan Police in Negros Occidental has arrested a police officer for shooting to death a 21-year-old man on Christmas day at the remote Barangay 2, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Taken into custody was PO1 Anthony Alipo-on, a mem- ber of the Ilog Municipal Po-lice Station also in Negros Occidental, for shooting to death Leonel Gaudia on Thursday morning.
Initial investigation showed that Alipo-on tried to pacify Gaudia, who kicked a trashcan in the barangay. It was not very clear as to why Alipo-on was in Himamaylan city when he was assigned at the neighboring Ilog Police Office.
Gaudia, who was reportedly drunk during that time, refused to obey Alipo-on and, instead, struck the policeman with a beer bottle, causing the latter to fell to the ground.
It was reportedly at this point that the policeman drew his gun and shot Gaudia on the right and left chest, the left shoulder and the left arm. Gaudia was rushed to the Himamaylan City District Hospital but was pronounced dead-on-arrival by the attending physician.
Police investigators also found that both Alipo-on and Gaudia had a previous disagreement.
The responding police team recovered six empty shells fired from a caliber 9mm pistol. They are also preparing administrative and criminal charges against Alipo-on that will be filed before the City Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.
