BAGUIO CITY: Youth leaders and former Sangguniang Kabataan officials in the Cordillera came together to urge Congress to pass the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) reform bill during the celebration of the International Youth Day here.
The National Youth Commission (NYC) together with Cordilleran youth spearheaded the nationwide action day for SK reform with activities at the People’s Park highlighted by the plea for the approval of the SK Reform and Empowerment Bill.
While acknowledging the limitations and issues surrounding the current SK system, the NYC is pushing to keep legislation on SK reform moving.
“It is time to pass SK reform measures to make it an effective institution and make young people partners for development,” the NYC stated.
NYC Commissioner Perci Cendaña said the activity is one way for the youth to voice out their support and to join the other youth groups nationwide in the call for the SK reform in the Senate and Congress.
“Kumakatok tayo sa puso ng mga senador at kongresista natin na bigyan ang panahon ang kabataang Pilipino. Gamitin natin wisely ang binigay na oras ng RA 10632 or the SK Postponement law by fixing SK and instituting the necessary reforms na matagal na nating pinapanawagan [We are knocking at the hearts of the senators and congressmen to give time to the Filipino youth. Let us use wisely the time given by RA 10632 or the SK Postponement law by fixing SK and instituting the necessary reforms that we have long been calling for],” he said.
It can be recalled that the October 2013 SK elections were postponed following the enactment of Republic Act 10632, which also re-scheduled the youth polls between October 2014 and February 2015 to give way to the passage of SK reform legislation.
