FORMER Supreme Court chief justice Renato Corona repeatedly uttered “thank God” after hearing Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada’s speech on Wednesday.
Corona, the first chief magistrate to be impeached by the Senate, said Estrada’s revelation that senators got a P50-million pork barrel bonus for convicting him in May last year was a vindication.
He said Estrada confirmed what he had been saying all along that Malacañang wielded its
power and money to have him removed from the Supreme Court.
“Salamat sa Diyos. Salamat sa Diyos. Lalabas din ang katotohanan (The truth will come out),” Corona told The Manila Times.
He said Estrada’s speech proved he was innocent.
“Hindi ako nagulat sa rebelasyon ni Senator Estrada sapagka’t kinumpirma lamang niya ang alam namin at ng marami sa ating mga kababayan. Sapul sa simula, sinabi ko na walang katotohanan ang mga paratang ng Malacanang sa akin at pawang kasinungalingan ang pinagsasabi nila tungkol sa akin. Lalabas at lalabas ang katotohanan (Estrada’s revelation didn’t surprise me because it merely confirmed what may of our people already know. From the start I had been saying that the charges Malacañang brought against me were all lies),” Corona said.
He maintained that his ouster was against the 1987 Constitution.
He also thanked the few broadcasters and journalists who believed in him and exposed the truth during the impeachment trial despite the demolition job orchestrated by the Palace.
Twenty-two senators voted to convict Corona, citing his failure to include in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs) his dollar accounts.
Estrada on Wednesday said the senators who convicted Corona were each given P50 million. He however said he stands by his decision to convict Corona.
