Defending champion Dennis Orcollo, on the other hand, lost to Gerwen Andreas in the first round, 8-9, in Group F and was relegated to the losers’ bracket. He bounced back by with a 9-7 win over Nick van den Berg.

Orcollo must win against Wang Ming to make it to the main draw.

In other results, former world champion Alex Pagulayan and Carlo Biado also fell to the losers’ side.

Pagulayan defeated Biado in the first round, 9-7, in Group E but bowed to Dang Ju Hu, 4-9, in the second round. Pagulayan will next face Hus Kai Lun.
