COTABATO CITY: This city’s incumbent Mayor Japal Guiani Jr. passed away on Thursday in Davao City after suffering from heart attack at the age of 56.
“It is with deepest sadness that we inform our fellow Cotabateños that our beloved Mayor Japal J. Guiani, Jr. has passed away this morning,” the city government of Cotabato said in a bulletin.
The mayor died of cardiac arrest in Davao City’s San Pedro Hospital where he was confined for more than three weeks, his relatives said without elaborating.
His remains were expected to be buried in this city within 24 hours under Muslim traditional rites.
Born here on June 7, 1960, the mayor served Cotabateños for about two decades straight. He as councilor and then vice mayor before he was elected as city mayor.
He is survived by his wife Maryssa Guerrero-Guiani and children – Grace Jehan, Japal 3rd, Jarissa and Jarylle.
