ILOILO CITY: The city council has unanimously approved a proposal by Councilor Jason Gonzales on the proper disposal of used lamps, especially those that contain mercury and other toxic elements. As reported by Committee on Heath chairman Lyndon Acap, the lamp wastes usually thrown by families along the streets and other areas without proper guidance pose serious health risks. Children usually playing with the broken lamps are most susceptible to mercury contamination. The proposal imposes no sanctions against persons caught playing with broken lamps but carries prohibitions against improper disposal. Gonzalez said he will incorporate the suggestions of fellow councilors on the proper disposal including containers and specific collection points of the toxic wastes.
