• Councilor, police wounded in Albay rebels’ ambush

A town councilor and a policeman were wounded on Friday after suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked a police patrol jeep heading to Daraga town in Albay.

Reports reaching the PNP National Operation Center in Camp Crame identified the victims as Mark Magalona, a Daraga town councilor and Senior Police Officer 4 John Mallorca of Daraga Municipal Police Station.

Albay police director Senior Supt. Marlo Meneses said the victims were onboard a police car along with four other when they were attacked at around 9:25 a.m., along Brgy. Bigao.

Magalona was supposed to attend a consultation meeting set by the mayor of Daraga Mayor Gerry Jaucian together with members of the town council.

The same report said the suspected rebels retreated before the arrival of police reinforcement team.

Brgy. Bigao is considered a rebel infested area, located some 20 kilometers away from the town proper.
