Couple gets life for animal abuse videos


SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: The Regional Trial Court (RTC) here sentenced to life imprisonment couple Vicente and Chita Dorma Ridon for making videos showing extreme cruelty to animals and selling the videos online.

The Ridons were charged by the National Bureau of Investigation for the graphic videos they filmed such as skinning a rabbit alive and setting it on fire, burning a dog with clothes iron, crushing of puppies and kittens until they vomited with their own internal organs and stabbing of monkeys and dogs in the eyes with a stiletto heel, among others.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), which appealed for help from concerned citizens in the internet, facilitated the couple’s arrest in Burgos, La Union last year.

The couple posted bail but the Department of Justice filed additional charges against them in connection with employing children in their scanty wears modeling in fetish videos.

Judge Alpino Florendo of RTC-Branch 30 said the Ridons were also charged for human trafficking, child abuse and violating animal welfare and wildlife protection.

The so-called “crush” videos showing cruelty to animals were sold online. In 2011, it went viral on YouTube and Facebook until Peta took notice and sought citizen’s help. Peta even offered a P100,000 reward for the whereabouts of the Ridons.

The testimonies of the couple’s two house helpers who were tasked to hire six teenage girls also corroborated the charges and eventually the court‘s decision.
