A three-month old baby girl was rescued and a couple was arrested by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) that foiled the attempt to sell the baby on Wednesday evening in Cebu City.
CIDG Director, Chief Supt. Victor Deona said the baby was rescued during pursuit operation conducted by CIDG operatives in Central Visayas early Tuesday evening in Cuyos Compound in Tayud, Liloan, Cebu.
Senior Supt. Marlon Tayabas, CIDG regional chief in Central Visayas identified the suspects as Mary Jane Carizon and her husband Michael Petiluna.
Police said the baby’s mother a cigarette vendor, reported that Carizon volunteered to look after her baby while she was tending her stall in a bus station in the city, only to find out later that the suspect was gone along with her baby.
Carizon admitted to the crime saying she intended to sell the baby to raise money for the treatment of her sick daughter. But police belied Corizon’s alibi taking witnesses’ account that the suspect’s daughter died long ago.
The suspects are now detained at CIDG Region 7 facing kidnapping charges.
