SOFIA: Maria Sharapova and boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov have split up after dating for over two years, Dimitrov confirmed to Bulgarian media over the weekend.
“Our paths parted,” Bulgarian tennis star Dimitrov told www.tenniskafe.com website after rumours about the break-up surfaced on social media.
“We lived through wonderful moments together. I wish her much happiness and success in life and tennis,” he said, adding that this was “the summer of a new beginning” for him.
Dimitrov, 24, who is number 16 in the world rankings, has had a difficult season and also parted ways with his coach Roger Rasheed earlier in July.
“Now I am fully concentrated on my game and I am sure the results will be visible soon,” the Bulgarian added.
He and five-time Grand Slam title winner Sharapova, 28, had been dating for over two years.
Meanwhile, World number two and 2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova of Russia, 2014 US Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki, two-time US Open champion Venus Williams and former US Open champions Samantha Stosur and Svetlana Kuznetsova are in the US Open direct entry lists.
The US Tennis Association said the world’s 99 top-ranked men and 100 of the top 101 women will be in the field when the year’s final Grand Slam event begins next month at Flushing Meadows.
