Courier company supports Road Safety initiative for kids

FedEx Express once again has partnered with Safe Kids Philippines to launch the “Young Road Safety Champion” award during the 10th anniversary celebration of National Safe Kids Week last June 23.

The Young Road Safety Champion award is granted to the most effective student-mentor of the Young Road Safety Advocate program.

The Young Road Safety Advocate campaign is a peer-to-peer traffic safety education program that enlists fifth-grade students to mentor their fourth-grade peers about safe pedestrian behaviors. This year, 328 junior road safety advocates from 27 schools in the cities of Pasay, Parañaque, Quezon, Angeles and Cebu participated in the program.

Ashley Crystal Dane Dumilon was recognized for her effectiveness as a road safety educator by her peers at Gueco Balibago Elementary School in Pampanga.

At the same time, FedEx and Safe Kids also launched the “Stop for Pedestrians” campaign that calls on both drivers and pedestrians to respect traffic regulations and urges organizations to develop road safety programs.

“At FedEx, we are committed to create safer pedestrian environments for the community. Through the National Safe Kids Week activities and our year-round advocacy work with Safe Kids, we hope to use our expertise in making the roads safer, particularly for children who are more vulnerable to traffic accidents,” said John Peterson, FedEx Express acting managing director for the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei.

The Young Road Safety Advocate campaign is part of the Walk this Way program launched by FedEx and Safe Kids Philippines in 2004. To date, this initiative has reached more than 1.7 million students in 102 schools. The Walk this Way program also includes The Walking School Bus, Mobile Road Safety Park, and Model School Zone Project.
