LOS ANGELES: A United States (US) federal court on Friday lifted a ban on same-sex marriage in California with immediate effect, following a landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court this week. The decision came only two days after the top US court’s ruling, much quicker than expected. “The stay in the above matter is dissolved effective immediately,” the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said in a ruling on a case at the center of legal wrangling over the issue. Within minutes, a gay couple who successfully challenged the so-called Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage in California, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, were married at Los Angeles City Hall.
