Cuba’s interior minister steps down

HAVANA: Cuba’s Interior Minister General Abelardo Colome — one of the founders of the Communist government’s intelligence services — has resigned citing health reasons after 26 years in the influential post, officials said Monday. The Council of State said it had “agreed to accept the resignation” of a man it lauded a national hero, in a statement read out on the state news broadcast. Colome, 76, and known by the nickname Furry, also served as a lawmaker in the National Assembly. General Carlos Fernandez Gondin, 77, replaced him, authorities said.
