Cubs’ Bryant hits longest homer of season

CHICAGO: The Chicago Cubs’ massive new video screen was the only thing stopping Cubs rookie Kris Bryant’s massive home run on Sunday (Monday in Manila). Bryant’s 23rd homer of the year, off Arizona Diamondbacks starter Rubby De La Rosa, would have sailed out of Wrigley Field had it not hit the board installed this year in the left-field bleachers as part of renovations to the venerable ballpark. As it was it was estimated to have cleared 495 feet — the longest home run in Major League Baseball this season. Bryant’s dinger was the Cubs’ first hit off of De La Rosa, tying the game at 1-1 and helping spark the hosts to a 6-4 win.
