Eight-peat feat-seeking San Beda seeks to stay at the helm as it takes on dangerous Lyceum of the Philippines U today in the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association junior’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Cubs overpowered the Letran Squires, 107-74, Monday to jumpstart its bid for an eighth straight crown and will keep a piece of the lead if they could hurdle the Junior Pirates in their 10:45 a.m. game today.
Joshua Tagala fired 19 points and spiked his effort with six rebounds and a season-high seven steals while Evan Nelle had 17 points, eight assists and six steals to help power San Beda to the win.
San Beda coach JB Sison, however, knows they’ll have a tougher time considering LPU finished tied for fourth last season before losing to CSB-La Salle Greenhills in a playoff for the fourth and last slot in the stepladder semis.
“We’re expecting a tough grind against them,” said Sison.
San Beda shares the early lead with LPU, which dumped Emilio Aguinaldo, 85-66, and last year’s runner-up Malayan-Mapua, Arellano U and CSB-La Salle Greenills, which defeated Jose Rizal, 86-74, Perpetual Help, 105-88, and San Sebastian, 75-60, respectively.
Other games of the day pit CSB-La Salle Greehills against Mapua-Malayan at 9 a.m., Jose Rizal versus Perpetual at 12:30 p.m., Arellano U against San Sebastian at 2:15 p.m. and Letran versus EAC at 4 p.m.
