Customs arrest balikbayan for carrying ammunition, marijuana

A BALIKBAYAN from Honolulu was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 2 for illegally transporting 16 pieces of 9mm live ammunition and marijuana leaves.

Customs authorities said that the bullets and marijuana were found inside the balikbayan box owned by Jefferson Garalde, 42, of Noveleta, Cavite, who arrived via Philippine Airlines flight PR101 from Hawaii on Sunday night.

Customs Duty Collector Malou Rosanes said that the bullets which were heavily taped in a small box were spotted through x-ray machine while the marijuana leaves were accidentally discovered by Customs examiner Alexander Diaz who conducted a rigid examination on Garalde’s belongings.

Garalde denied he owned the illegal stuff where he told authorities that a friend in Honolulu asked him to bring it to Manila.

“Pinadala lang daw sa kanya ng isang kaibigan na taga Honolulu,” NAIA Customs police chief Reggie Tuazon said.

Tuazon added that the bullets did not have a permit from the Philippine National Police prior to its transport.

Customs authorities said Garalde is facing a possible jail term if found guilty for violation of Section 11 of RA 9165 of the Dangerous Drug Act, and Section 32 of the Comprehensive Firearms Law. (BENJIE L. VERGARA)
