• Customs employee collaredfor receiving bribe money

A CUSTOMS employee at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was arrested by operatives of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Customs Enforcement and Security Service personnel for allegedly asking money from a client. The Bureau of Customs (BOC) identified the employee as Ethel Bernas, a Customs operations officer 3 assigned at the Auction and Cargo Disposal Division of the NAIA collection district. Bernas was arrested following a complaint filed by Jane Louise Balse, who claimed that Bernas offered to facilitate the release of container vans loaded with used clothings or locally known as “Ukay-Ukay” from Hong Kong and the United States in exchange for an initial payment of P1 million. She said Balse also asked for an additional P425,000 “for other BOC officials”.
