Customs releases 400 ‘balikbayan’ boxes

CUSTOMS Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon on Thursday gave the go-signal for the release of some 400 overstaying balikbayan boxes that have been at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) since last March after they were abandoned by their US-based international cargo forwarder RDR Forwarding. The forwarder failed to secure a local firm to process the shipment because of bankruptcy. Faeldon approved their release after an agreement was signed between the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the winning bidder, Pherica International. The BOC requested that instead of selling the boxes to other parties, they would be released to their original owners at reasonable cost in time for the Christmas season.
