CUTFLOWER PRODUCERS SEE GOOD HARVEST FOR VALENTINE, PANAGBENGA

Flower growers in Baguio and Benguet Province remained hopeful for a bountiful harvest in February in time for the high demand for fresh flowers on Valentines Day and the Baguio flower festival known as “Panagbenga.” Victor Calimlim, an official of the Baguio public market vendors association, said even the giant red and white American roses, which are traditionally sold by the thousands during Valentines Day are now affected by the cold weather which is now on its 35th day. He said cold weather stunted growth and a longer period of efflorescence is needed with the temperature range of 8.0 to 10 degrees Celsius. The annual Panagbenga festival gives local farmers the opportunity to sell not less than 1,000 tons of fresh flowers, mostly of foreign strain from America, Malaysia, Japan and countries in Europe.
