• DA bans bird imports from Taiwan

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has issued a temporary ban on the importation of poultry and wild birds from Taiwan because of the avian influenza threat. In a memorandum order, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala ordered the temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds—including poultry meat, day old chicks, eggs and semen— originating from Chiayi County, Taiwan to protect the Philippines’ local poultry population, as well as human health. “We have been taking all the necessary measures to protect our borders against avian diseases, which could impend over our country’s growing poultry industry,” Alcala said.
