• DA lifts bird import ban

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has lifted the ban on the importation of poultry and other poultry products from Canada and Japan after confirmation by global animal health authorities that the said countries have been declared free from bird flu virus. Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala ordered the immediate lifting of the ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds and their products – including poultry meat, day old chicks, eggs and semen – originating from British Columbia in Canada and Japan. Alcala, however, said that all import transactions of products should be in accordance with the existing rules and regulations of the Bureau of Animal Industry and the National Meat Inspection Service. The Philippines remains the only country in Southeast Asia free from highly pathogenic avian influenza or bird flu.
