Dagupan police harass city mayor’s leaders

DAGUPAN CITY: Mayor Benjamin Lim lodged a complaint against the Dagupan police on

Wednesday, claiming that some of his leaders are being harassed by the Dagupan City Police headed by Supt. Christopher Abrahano.

An irate Lim rushed to the Dagupan City Police Station along with his lawyer and followers to register his complaint that one of his leaders, Noel Melecio, a former barangay chairman was allegedly being harassed and tailed by policemen even as he goes to San Fabian town.

The Dagupan police denied Lim’s allegations, even as the latter questioned the presence of numerous policemen not only in the city but also in
the entire province, saying that Pangasinan remains peaceful and orderly.

Abrahano said what they are doing is standard procedure for security measures in Dagupan City to prepare for the coming election.

“Legitimate police officers are the ones in the area [Dagupan]. They are the augmentation policemen sent here to maintain peace and order. Not only Dagupan has been given augmentation forces,” Abrahano said.

He explained that in San Carlos City, the augmentation forces are from the Philippine Army performing regular police functions.

Commenting on Lim’s claim that his leaders are being harassed, Abrahano said: “We welcome any formal complaint that they will file against us.”

Speaking in front of the press, Lim said he went to the police station to verify the allegations after learning that Melecio is being watched for three days already.

Lim also claimed that another one of his leaders, former Councilor Nick Aquino, called him to inform that the same thing was being done to him by the police.

Abrahano, who was not around when Lim rushed to the police station, assured the mayor that they are not harassing his leaders, and policemen will be punished if they did. The superintendent further assured that his policemen are non-partisan.
