• Dance to ‘Yugyugan 2016’


    From April 24 to 30, the different parts of the country will mark the International Dance Day and National Dance Week with simultaneous dance rallies.

    The nationwide festivity dubbed “Yugyugan Para sa Kultura ng Bayan” is spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), led by its chairman Prof. Felipe de Leon Jr., and OIC-executive director Adelina Suemith.

    Dubbed “Yugyugan Para sa Kultura ng Bayan,” the nationwide dance rally will feature over a hundred dancers, choreographers, school troupes and companies performing together as one. The highlight will be the simultaneous dance performance of the song “Sagisag Kultura” at exactly 6 p.m. on April 29

    The NCCA’s National Committee on Dance, led by its committee head Josefina Guillen, is also organizing other activities in various locations.

    In Manila, the 2nd Ballet Manila X NCCA International Dance Day Festival 2016 will be on April 29, with matinee show at 3 p.m. and gala show at 7 p.m., at the Aliw Theater in CCP Complex, Pasay City.

    Hosted by Ballet Manila artistic director and prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde and Osias Barroso Jr. as festival directors, the 2nd Festival will showcase a wider variety of dance, from classical ballet to modern, hip hop, folk and ethnic dance forms.

    For the matinee show, there will be two segments. The first segment will feature performances by Pink Toes, Dance Theater Arts, Ecole de Ballet Manille, Vella C. Damian School, Ridgepoint Ballet, Nilda Gomez School of Ballet from Iloilo, Hampton Court of Dance, The Dance Conservatory from Pampanga, CCP Dance School, Shirley Halili Cruz School of Ballet, FEU Dance Group.

    For the second segment of the matinee show, the dance performers include Ballet Baguio, Perry Sevidal Ballet School, St. Theresa Radaic Ballet School, ACTS Manila, Academy One, Danspace Manila, STEPS Dance Studio, LPU Dance Troupe, Lahing Kayumanggi Mananayaw ng Marikina, Sining Lahi Dance Troupe of Lakandula High School, and PNU Balingsasayaw.

    The Ballet Manila will continue the celebration with a gala show, featuring Bayanihan, Pole Cats, Indian Cultural Dance, Korean Cultural Center, Katutubo Exchange, Air Dance, G Force, Daloy, Manoeuvres, Philippine Ballet Theater, Ballet Philippines and Ballet Manila 2.

    For the Luzon cluster, the dance event will be held on April 27, 6 p.m., at CCA Theater of Saint Louis University in Baguio City, Mt. Province. Meanwhile, the Visayas dance rally in partnership with The Sinulog Foundation Inc. will be on April 29, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the Abellana Sports Complex Ground in Cebu City.

    In pursuant of the Presidential Proclamation No. 154, which declares the fourth week of April every year as the National Dance Week, the celebration aims to raise consciousness on preserving culture and tradition through dance.

    Meanwhile, the International Dance Day was created under the auspices of UNESCO in Paris and held all over the world by the International Theater Institute (ITI) on April 29. Its mission is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form and transcend political, social and ethnic barriers and bring people together through the common language of dance.
