Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles is the new president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the Catholic organization announced on Saturday.
Valles, vice president of the CBCP for four years, will succeed Archbishop Socrates Villeags of Lingayen, Dagupan who steps down this year after serving as head of the CBCP for two terms, the Catholic organization said.
Valles is known to be close to the family of President Rodrigo Duterte, according to reports ahead of the CBCP election.
It was Valles who baptized Duterte’s youngest grandson Marko Digong “Stonefish” Carpio.
Completing the new set of CBCP officers are Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David (vice president), Palo Archbishop John Du (treasurer), and Fr. Marvin Mejia (secretary general).
