Displaying a solid defensive performance, Davao Aguilas FC forced Global Cebu FC to a goalless draw in the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Saturday night at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Davao Aguilas buckled down on the defensive end anchored on goalkeeper Marko Trkulja’s brilliant effort as they split the points with powerhouse Global Cebu.
“Obviously (I am) very happy with the result today compared to last time. They were very organized and Trkulja managed the back four very well,” said Davao head coach Gary Philipps according to MyCebu.ph
“The players tried really hard but Davao was better organized on defense and they were able to adjust well,” said Global assistant coach Marjo Allado.
The Davaoeños hiked their total to five points though they stayed on No. 6 with a 0-5-5 win-draw-loss record.
The Cebuanos, on the other hand, remained on No. 2 with 21 points on a 6-3-2 card.
However, the Visayan club squandered the chance to snatch the top spot with an advantage in goal difference against FC Meralco Manila, which suffered a 0-7 beatdown to Ceres Negros FC earlier at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Global enjoyed much of the ball possession but failed to break down Trkulja’s sturdy goalkeeping and convert its chances in front of the 4,500 fans.
After four off-target attempts from the home side in the first half, Shu Sasaki launched a shot that was grabbed by Trkulja.
The Serbian goalkeeper also came to Davao’s rescue in the second half as he denied Hikaru Minegishi and saved a last-ditch header from Sekou Sylla.
