Davao refugee shelter torched, 4 minors hurt

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Unidentified men burned early on Wednesday a dormitory housing tribesmen inside the United Church of Christ of the Philippines compound in Davao City, injuring five persons, among them four minors. The women’s group –Gabriela strongly condemned the arson and quick to blame pro-government militias for the burning of the dormitory that shelters the natives who fled military operations in the provinces. The police last year raided the compound and forced the tribesmen to return to their villages. But the natives were afraid to return home claiming alleged harassment by government troops battling communist rebels in Davao.
