University of Mindanao trackster Sonny Wagdos made his presence felt in the ongoing 8th BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asia Growth Area) Games by winning two gold medals on Tuesday at the Labuan Sports Complex in Malaysia.
Wagdos topped the men’s 5,000-meter run after checking in at 16 minutes and 25.99 seconds to beat silver medalist Zainuddin of Malaysia, who submitted 16:48.66 and bronze winner Glein Payac of the Philippines, who had 17:41.84.
The 20-year-old Wagdos also dominated the men’s 1,500m run.
Besides the two golds, Wagdos also earned a silver in the men’s 800m run then helped the men’s 4×400 relay team in claiming the bronze medal.
Davao native April Rose Guiang chipped in one silver in the women’s discus throw as she registered 31.03 meters. Wong Xiao Jing of Indonesia took the gold with a 35.32-meter showing while Denise Mary William of Malaysia grabbed the bronze in 29.18m.
Guiang was also part of the women’s 4×400 meter relay team that won a bronze medal.
The Philippines is aiming for two more gold medals as the men’s beach volleyball team and the men’s basketball team made it to the finals.
The Pinoy spikers are scheduled to face Malaysia while the Filipino cagers will also be battling the Malaysian squad.
